Better Tripe Than Mine

Ernest Hemingway's The Office

It was raining and we walked and we walked along the long road through the rain. The road led down into a valley and above us were the mountains and the clouds and the blue sky. We walked along the road and there was a stone wall and an orchard and another field on the other side and we were happy but our feet were sore. We stopped to eat some bread and a cheese and wine and afterwards some more wine and brandy and then we weren't so tired. I hadn't wanted to fall in love with her but I was happy because we were happy and at night we slept in the same bed and it was nice and when she asked were we happy I said we were even if it wasn't true and she didn't notice except maybe once. Sometimes in the night I thought about other things but then she was beside me and it was ok and I liked the night. But sometimes it was still the night and it was only ok because she was beside me and I thought of the mountains very green and also blue in the night and they were green and mountainy and green and blue but mostly green and still I thought how mountainy it was but she was beside me and it was still the night and it was ok even though it was very green and the mountains were terrible.
